Asin Mary Thottumkal known as Asin was born on 26th October, 1985 in Kochi, Kerala, India. She studied B.A. English Literature at St. Teresa’s College, Kochi. Asin is a a popular model-film actress. Asin is a native speaker of Malayalam, and claims to speak Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Sanskrit, English and French. Before becoming an actress, she was a part-time model and a businesswoman. She started modeling at the age of 14 and is trained in Bharatnatyam and folk dance. Asin’s stills shouts her ability to dance. She debuted in Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001, directed by Sathyan Anthikkad. The film did not do good at the box-office, however she did a number of movies in Telugu including ‘Amma Nana O Tamila Ammai’ (2003- role of a Tamil girl) for which she received the Filmfare Best Actress award, ‘Sivamani 98480 22338′ (2003), ‘Lakshmi Narasimha’ (2004), ‘Gharshana’ (2004), ‘Chakram’ (2005) etc. You can view some of the Asin’s pictures in this site.
The name Asin is the combination of the prefix “A” from the Sanskrit language and the word “Sin” from the English language. It means – “Without blemish – pure”.Her initial attempts in Tamil movies were not successful as the projects failed to takeoff as planned due to various reasons. Her first Tamil release was. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi which was a remake of her Telugu film Amma Naan O’ Tamil Ammayee. The movie went on to be one of the biggest hits in 2004 and introduced Asin to Kollywood.
Many movies followed and Asin played opposite some popular actors in South Indian Cinema, among them Surya, Vijay, Vikram and Ajith, with whom she stared in Godfather. Her next movies include Pokiri with Vijay and Chennaiyil Oru Mazhai Kaalam with Surya.

I think I have a flair for
languages. Now, I do my own dubbing. The working styles in both the Tamil and Telugu film industries are the same. Very professional and friendly and they encourage new talent in a big way.”
